Who knows the brand Teufel from hi‐fi prod­ucts can skip the first lines of this arti­cle. Oth­ers might know Teufel from con­ve­nient speaker sys­tems for home‐cinema or Desktop‐PCs. The high per­for­mance at low price of these prod­ucts on the other hand is cer­tainly undis­puted. There is also another side, since Teufel is renowned in the field of high‐end prod­ucts as well. Best exam­ple is the speaker set Ultima‐800.
The tower speak­ers are like a present for the 30^th birth­day of the man­u­fac­turer. Teufel them­selves claim that the entire com­pe­tence and knowl­edge of speaker man­u­fac­tur­ing is bun­dled within this set. Cus­tomers can there­fore look for­ward to high per­for­mance set with­out com­pro­mises.
Only first‐class mate­ri­als have been applied with­out exep­tion. Main hous­ing, cover, con­nec­tions and all built‐in com­po­nents are top‐graded. When look­ing under cov­ers, the over­sized tweet­ers of huge 33cm attract atten­tion. The calotte is cooled, a neodymium‐magnet com­bined with long‐stroke results in dynamic and firm repro­duc­tions of the high­est fre­quen­cies.
The midrange dri­ver has got a diam­e­ter of 10 cm. The mem­brane is made of tita­nium; a neodymium‐ mag­net is present here, too. The wide radi­a­tion and a con­cave struc­ture are a guar­an­tee for a first‐ class lis­ten­ing plea­sure. Sta­bil­ity is enthroned on the high­est level.
Alto­gether six bass dri­vers ensure the bass dom­i­nance. Two of them are active ele­ments, while the other four pas­sive dri­vers pro­vide seri­ous pres­sure from below in a sand­wich con­struc­tion. Each dri­ver has got a diam­e­ter of 170 mil­lime­tres.
Only by know­ing this one can esti­mate that these speak­ers are not made for small rooms. How­ever, a four‐stage set­ting option for the pas­sive mem­branes is avail­able at rear. This way, every lis­tener gets his or her set­ting and the speak­ers leave enough room for exper­i­ments. With a 43‐litres‐volume, they take quite some space, though. The weight of 31 kilo­grams each under­lines the mas­sive design. As spe­cial high­light, the speak­ers have got a low‐loss crossover‐network. The crossover‐network has been tuned to the opti­mum by Teufel through the most detailed elab­o­ra­tion.
Alto­gether the Teufel Ultima 800 speak­ers pro­vide the high­est per­for­mance at a rea­son­able price. At a list price of 2498.00 £ they are at sig­nif­i­cant dis­tance below com­pa­ra­ble speak­ers. In the end, the offered com­po­nents are to be found only in mod­els at five‐figure prices. Even though this isn’t small money, Teufel proves once more an out­stand­ing price/​performance ratio.
